This innovation led to Mij™, the first wearable technology designed to monitor and address Thermal Stress, a critical yet often overlooked health issue and a biomarker that isn’t currently measure by any of the major players. The team is already working on the next iteration of wearable technology that is both dynamic and personalized.

What is Mij?

Mij™ (pronounced “Me”) is an integrated soft-sensing technology discreetly embedded into clothing. No clunky wires, no bulky batteries - Mij™ functions like any regular piece of clothing, combining comfort with cutting-edge functionality. Its primary focus is measuring Thermal Stress, an essential but often ignored biomarker. 

Equipped with NFC and Bluetooth capabilities, Mij™ transmits live data to the Mij™ app, allowing users to monitor localized temperature, humidity, and heat index in real time. This empowers individuals to track how their environment impacts their body and make informed decisions to stay safe and comfortable.

Microclimate and Performance

Mij™ was used by an ultra-marathon runner during a challenging race in the Arizona desert to optimize performance and manage the harsh microclimate. Throughout the race, Mij™ continuously monitored the localized temperature, humidity, and heat stress in the runner’s immediate environment. During a steep climb in the intense afternoon heat, Mij™ detected rising thermal stress and alerted the runner to slow their pace and take a cooling break at the next checkpoint. This timely adjustment helped prevent heat exhaustion while maintaining performance.

After crossing the finish line, Mij™ provided a detailed analysis of the microclimate conditions faced during the race, helping the runner understand how the environment impacted their performance and recovery. By offering real-time data and actionable insights, Mij™ enabled the runner to stay safe, adapt to the extreme conditions, and improve strategies for future events.

Recover and Performance

Mij™ was put to the test during several high-stress rescue operations with Search and Rescue teams in Colorado. In one mission, responders hiked deep into rugged wilderness, traversing multiple ridges to reach a patient. Carrying heavy packs and uncertain about the patient's needs, the team faced both physical and environmental challenges. While time was critical, Mij™ provided real-time data on the microclimate, highlighting team members experiencing elevated thermal stress upon arrival. These individuals were given a moment to stabilize their microclimate before resuming their critical work. Post-operation, Mij™ delivered valuable insights for reports, enabling officials to refine protocols and improve response strategies for future incidents. By focusing on the surrounding environment, Mij™ ensured responders remained protected and effective, even under the most demanding conditions. (due to HIPPA compliance, we are unable to give a full

Hydration and Heat Safety

During a grueling summer training session in the sweltering heat, a police officer relied on Mij™ to stay safe and perform at their best while wearing full tactical gear. The scenario involved high-intensity drills, including running, climbing, and tactical maneuvers, all under the blazing sun. Mij™ continuously monitored the microclimate inside the officer’s gear, tracking localized temperature, humidity, and heat stress levels as the session progressed. 

As the heat index climbed and thermal stress levels rose, Mij™ issued an alert, prompting the officer to take a brief break in the shade and hydrate. This timely intervention allowed the officer to prevent overheating and maintain focus during the demanding exercises. After the session, Mij™ provided detailed insights into how the gear and environmental conditions affected the officer’s microclimate. These insights enabled the officer and their commanders to better understand the hydration and cooling strategies their team would need for future training sessions under similar conditions, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the entire unit.

Understanding Thermal Stress

Thermal Stress is responsible for over 500,000 deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. It occurs when the body struggles to regulate heat, exacerbating chronic health issues and impairing physical performance. Managing the microclimate - the balance of temperature and humidity between the skin and clothing - is critical to mitigating these risks. 

Historically, monitoring microclimate conditions required expensive, bulky equipment, making it inaccessible to most people. Mij™ changes this by providing real-time, accessible insights into thermal stress. By bringing thermal sensing out of the lab and into daily life, Mij™ empowers individuals to navigate heat stress safely, reduce risks, and enhance performance in work, play, and life.
